Now, I love T2 as much as the next person. Saw it opening day in the theaters and still thinks it holds up well. But no way is it better than Godfather 2.

But Empire Strikes Back? Heck yes--that is a superior picture. (And yes, I have watched both Empire and Godfather II recently.) I would use stronger language--John may remember that I work blue, so to speak--but this is a family blog.

The Empire Strikes Back is clearly the superior sequel, in my mind. Godfather II is worthy of second place for sure, but I think the real travesty of this list is the low places afforded to The Two Towers and Toy Story 2. I mean, seriously -- how is The Bourne Supremacy better than those two?

I can't believe I am reading this!

The Empire Strikes Back won an Oscar for best sound and was not even nominated for Best Picture.

Godfather II won Best Picture (the first sequel ever to win it), Best Actor (Pacino); Best Supporting Actor (3 actors from the film were nominated and Robert DeNiro won it); Best Director (Coppola); Best Adapted Screenplay (Coppola and Puzo); and Best Art Direction; Best Music.

There is no comparison!

John - I originally clicked on the comment link to say that the article on 'the next pope should come from Sudan' was a great piece. But seeing all these comments on the sequal ratings, I must throw in my *two* cents. G2 is indeed a great movie, but I'm not likely to watch it a second time. However I have seen Empire several times. Seeing your ardent defense of G2, I wonder whether your Italian roots go down to some dark places? :)

After further reflection, I felt the urge to post a sequel comment on the sequel poll. Maybe it's due to the relative youth or short memories of those who took the poll (only 3 of the top ten are more than twenty years old)... But where is Mel Gibson's "Road Warrior"? Surely that's a classic on a par with T2 in both genre and entertainment value. :)

Dave: It would not be the first time that my Italian roots led me to dark places, but I am deeply moved by Godfather 2. The final scene where Michael is sitting in a chair on a cold autumn day reflecting on his life is one of the most powerful scenes in all of film.

I saw Empire Strikes back once and do not think I will ever see it again. I have seen Godfather 2 dozens of times. If it were on TV tonight I would sit down and watch it again.

As for Road Warrior 2, it probably deserves a spot in the top 10 over Toy Story 2.
