Jesus Will Return on May 22, 2011

According to this Colorado ad:

And what is Jerry Jenkins doing hiding behind all those copies of his Left Behind novels?

John,

I saw the same video on CNN and was intrigued enough to check out the website to see what it was all about. One of the things I found most interesting was a piece called "God Gives Another Infallible Proof . . ." that was on the right hand side of webpage. Reading through the website made me think of William Miller and his movement in the 1840s since the date of the world's destruction is October 21, 2011 (the May date is actually the rapture prediction). When I checked out the piece, however, I noticed that Miller's "calculations" seem elementary in comparison. If you haven't checked that part out, I suggest you do, simply to see the sheer amount of effort that has gone into predicting that date. There's probably at least an article somewhere to discuss the fascination with using math and scripture to predict the return of Jesus.

I also wondered, as you point out, does Jenkins always keep those novels on his desk, or was that just product placement for the interview?

Todd: There is a Ph.D student at Duke working on the the role of math and science in dispensational theology. His name is Brandon Pietsch. It is a really interesting project.

I also remember a movement called "99 Reasons Why the Rapture Will Occur in 1999."

Thanks for the comment!

Same thing happened in 1988 with a booklet that came out called "88 Reason Christ Will Return in 1988" by Ed Whisnut. We are still here even though I'd prefer to be there. Keep the faith.
