Messiah College will be hosting Geoffrey Galt Harpham, president and director of the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Harpham is on campus to deliver the keynote address for the annual Messiah College Humanities Symposium. The theme of this year's symposium is "Wealth: The Promises and Perils of Abundance." Harpham's address is titled: "Melancholy in the Midst of Abundance: How Americans Invented the Humanities."
I will have a peripheral role to play in Harpham's visit. Some English and History faculty will be having coffee with him this morning and I will also be interviewing him later in the day for a special edition of the "Virtual Office Hours." Stay tuned. I know everyone in the humanities community at Messiah College is excited to have Dr. Harpham on campus.
