Jean Bethke Elshtain R.I.P.

I was sad to hear about the passing of University of Chicago social critic Jean Bethke Elshtain at the age of 72.  I had never met Elshtain or even heard her speak, but I have learned a lot from her work, especially Democracy on Trial.  Anyone who reads my Why Study History? will see my debt to her work.

Here are some tributes to her life and work:

Emma Green at The Atlantic

Sarah Pulliam Bailey at Religion News Service

Obituary from the Chicago Tribune

R.R. Reno at First Things

My favorite tribute so far comes from Peter Steinfels at dotCommonweal. You can read it here.
