Conversations with Amy Bass

I had a great on-air conversation today with Amy Bass, the host of "Conversations with Amy Bass" on WVOX in Westchester County, NY.

Amy is the best historian/cultural critic working today at the intersection of sports, race, and American culture.  Check out her books:

Not the Triumph But the Struggle: 1968 Olympics and the Making of the Black Athlete

In the Game: Race Identity, and Sports in the Twentieth Century

Those About Him Remained Silent: The Battle over W.E.B. Du Bois

Did I also mention that she runs the research room for NBC's Olympic Coverage?

But today our conversation centered around the recent visit of the Pope.

Some highlights:

  • We talked about just how "surreal" it was for a Pope to be speaking in Congress in light of America's long history of anti-Catholicism
  • We had some great callers from a few different political/religious perspectives.
  • One of those callers was Dan Cohen, a close friend from graduate school who I do not get to see or talk to very much these days.  It was great to hear his voice.
If you have some free time on Tuesday mornings you need to live-stream Amy Bass's show on WVOX.  She always has great guests and great conversation.
